Chapter Nine

Iron

I didn’t like how scared Nari became the moment she saw her stepsister. If I could, I’d get up and run that little bitch out of the diner. Sooner or later, she’d have to face her fears. I only wished it had come after she felt more secure with her place in my life. No matter how many times I said I was in this for the long haul and there wouldn’t be a divorce, I could tell she didn’t necessarily believe me.

My dad watched the girl like a hawk. She passed our table and found a seat in the center of the room. Naturally. From what I’d learned of her, she craved attention. I also saw the second she realized Nari was beside me. Her eyes widened slightly and her lips parted right before I saw a flash of anger cross her face. She schooled her features and smiled, then excused herself from her friends.

“Nari? When did you come back to town?” Joon asked in a syrupy sweet voice that made me want to gag.

“Does it matter?” I asked. Under the table, I felt her grab my thigh. She held onto me like I was her lifeline, and I realized it was exactly how she saw me.

“I wasn’t talking to you.” Joon’s nose wrinkled. “Why is my sister with dirty bikers anyway?”

“They aren’t dirty,” Nari said in a soft voice. “And what I do has nothing to do with you, Joon. Just pretend I’m not even here.”

I doubted her sister caught the whispered you should be good at that, but I sure the fuck did. My dad did as well, judging from his expression. I’d never seen him so angry before, except for when it came to Roe. Any time my sister was upset or in trouble, my dad lost his shit. He looked to be a few seconds away from exploding out of the booth right now. Looked like he really did think of Nari as his daughter.

“I believe what my wife is trying to say is she’d like you to leave us the fuck alone,” I said.

“Wife?” She stared at Nari, then me. “What’s that supposed to mean? She’s already engaged to someone else.”

“Funny. First time Nari heard anything about her engagement was after we were married.” All right, not the least bit true, but she didn’t have to know that. “How can she be engaged to someone without knowing about it? Seems a bit odd to me.”

“I’m telling Dad about this,” Joon said. “You just wait. He’ll make sure you divorce this guy and come home where you belong.”

My dad cleared his throat and glowered at Joon. “I suggest you move the fuck along. You even think of doing anything to my daughter-in-law or my son, and I will make sure you and your family regret ever coming to this town. I think you’ve hurt her enough already, don’t you?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about! Nari is a cherished member of my family.” Joon gave another fake smile.
